And so another day has gone

I swear that my titles are getting less and less creative. I think I'm gonna need to start using random word generators soon. So anyway, seeing as how I've developed a bit of a habit of doing film reviews for no apparent reason, I thought that I would do a review of a movie I saw today with a friend of mine. The superhero movie, Chronicle.

When I heard of another found footage type film, I pretty much dismissed it right away but when I heard it was a superhero found footage film I found the concept on it interesting enough and the trailers were absolutely brilliant so that got my attention enough to go and see it.

After seeing it, I now know that this isn't a found footage movie. Unlike other found footage films, this film opens with and closes with credits and we even get a title card, also the film isn't restricted to just one camera but others, such as security cameras or phone cameras. It's more of a point of view film, with the point of view being from various cameras throughout the film. Also, one of the characters in the film practices his tele-knesis on his camera, this means that often the camera will float through the scene, so every moving shot isn't incredibly shaky. Also this allows the camera to move more freely throughout the scene. I personally liked this approach, it was creative and wasn't as limiting as just one hand held camera would have been. I particularly liked the set up of one scene where two of the characters are floating in the air and they are levitating various phones, cameras and even laptops in the air around them, so we get to see the various points of views form the cameras in all of these which creates this beautifully setup scene.

After seeing the trailers, I thought that this film was just going to be a straight comedy. Sure, the trailer had a few bits which alluded to some darker moments but I thought that those would be few in number. But the film itself is actually a pretty dark film. There are some really emotional and even some heartbreaking scenes. Yes the funny moments from the trailers are in the movie and they are genuinely funny and enjoyable but a lot of the scenes (especially ones involving the character Andrew) are tragic and emotional, especially in the films climax.

One of the things I assumed form the trailers was that our three main characters were going to be a bunch of unlikable frat boys that just screw around with their powers. But the characters in the film were likable and they struggled with their powers as they got stronger and stronger. At first they enjoy their powers but as the film goes on, they get stronger and they find it harder and harder to control themselves. I really did like this movie, I'm a big fan of super hero movies and I love the spin that this movie puts on the genre. It was done well and I recently found out that this was the directors (Josh Trank) and writers (Mark Landis) first feature film. I look foreword to what these two can do in the future cos they're off to a great start, Josh Trank is the youngest director to ever have a film go to number one in the U.S and the U.K, he even beat Steven Speilberg and James Cameron.

Wow, that was long post.

So anyways guys have an awesome week
